Yuval Noah Harari is an Israeli historian who published a book called Homo Deus a decade ago. He called almost exactly where things head. The rich stop chasing survival and start chasing godhood. Everybody else slides into a class the system has no practical use for. Read the book in 2026 and you spend most of it checking his claims against the news, because the money already showed up.

Neuralink, Musk's brain-implant company, has twelve people carrying its chips right now, with high-volume production promised this year. Bezos has quietly put billions toward reversing how a human body ages. Altman planted chrome spheres in shopping malls that scan people's eyes and tie the scan to an identity and a payment account. When the anti-aging work runs slow, the same men dig bunkers and point rockets at the moon. Harari described this agenda ten years ago. These men are paying for it now.

Harari has a name for the people on the wrong end of this. He calls them the useless class, meaning people the system quits needing at all. Notice how quietly it happens. Nobody bars a door and nobody hands out a layoff notice. You just get sorted into whichever tier of the future you can afford. That version keeps drifting away from the one the men at the top keep for themselves.

Trust Moves to the Algorithm

Harari's deeper claim is about trust, meaning who gets the last word on your life. Authority once belonged to the gods. Then a few centuries of humanism taught people to trust their own feelings instead. His bet is that authority shifts one final time, to the algorithm. That is the software that has logged your heartbeat and your spending for so long that it reads you better than you do. Once that happens, following its advice on a job or a spouse no longer feels like giving in. It just feels smart.

That is why the sphere in the mall matters more than it looks. Every scan adds to the record that lets a system start making the calls you used to make yourself. The watch on your wrist runs the same trade at a smaller scale. All of it shows up as convenience, one sensible step at a time, until the morning you notice the important choices stopped being yours.

Who Builds It

The question Harari never asks is who pours the foundation. Each of these exits has to get built, then kept alive in the real world. A bunker needs moving air to keep its owner alive, and its generator has to start the instant the grid quits. A moon base needs its life support running without pause, or everyone inside dies. The healing machines these men dream about will need a person who can repair them down to the last board.

That person comes from the trades, every time. The same worker getting sorted onto the eight-dollar tier is the worker getting hired to build the exits he will never be invited into. Sit with that, because the leverage lives right there. A forecast can promise paradise all day. Somebody still lands the feeders and answers the alarm at three in the morning. That job cannot be downloaded, and it is the one part of the plan no subscription covers.
